Awesome rust, insidious step, call a friend: Cadillac Escalade 3 gen with a range of 200,000 km (part 1)
Do I need to visit an official dealer for owners of large luxury SUVs? Recently, we have already answered this question in the affirmative, at least if we are talking about a car of a European luxury brand. But what about the big “American”, because they are all simple in design, unpretentious and seem to not require qualified attention? We found a nine-year-old third-generation Cadillac Escalade, which traveled more than 200,000 km along Moscow roads, went to the “official”, where he had been servicing all this time, picked it up on the lift and asked all the stereotypical questions that accompanied us, simultaneously clarifying that, in In principle, it can happen on such runs at the frame “American”.
While the car is being washed, cleaned and prepared for inspection, I ask the local Roman technician what the official Cadillac dealer can offer me – why do I need it, especially after the warranty ends? I don’t expect any special frills, because the “American luxury” – both in terms of the quality of the cars and the direction of development of car designs, and the principles of service in the dealer network, stands apart from European and Asian premium brands. And despite the fact that as good as the Americans, nobody knows how to sell cars! 17 million new cars annually for 350 million inhabitants – there is no such ratio in the world anywhere else: study, study and study again! Well, in Russia Cadillac cannot boast of big sales, but everything else – by strong American standards!
The assets of the Russian “officials” Cadillac have a gigantic database of faults, thanks to which 99.9% of breakdowns are quickly identified and, therefore, easily fixed, but this, perhaps, is not the main thing, as well as the possession of repair technologies approved by the plant manufacturer. The main thing here is the opportunity at any time to connect with the technical support of the enterprise. This may be necessary if a unit or unit malfunction is detected in which case Cadillac does not allow the dealer to intervene as part of the routine maintenance and repair. This is rare, but it does happen. Say, problems with the exchange of data on the tires between the control units of different units is a single thing, but if it happens to you, only the plant will help. A similar range of issues is not described in the service manuals, and you can solve the problem only with direct communication with Cadillac engineers. How does the chassis go?
Usually, with long runs, both levers and ball bearings suffer, and even with careful operation, the fact is that the wheels with a 22-inch diameter landing wheel, which are often placed on the Escalade, are too heavy. At the same time, on different series of the car there were two designs of levers: aluminum changed as an assembly, on steel it was possible to separately change the ball. The front shock absorbers flow – as on our sample, and, as we see, very intensively. True, they are native here, despite the fact that the mileage is almost 200,000 km. For drivers who prefer tough operating conditions and drive the Escalade off-road, levers together with shock absorbers are usually subject to replacement up to 80 thousand km, for tidy drivers – at 120-150 thousand. Usually, wheel bearings are immediately replaced. In other cars they are so worn out that the owners come complaining of an incomprehensible hum in the cabin. However, they can extend their life by frequent balancing – this is critical for large wheels.
Rear shock absorbers are a weak point. They are air cylinders that maintain level depending on the load at the rear. Sometimes they jam, sometimes lose their tightness, although with good care they can walk for quite a while. This assembly is changing, since the manufacturer does not produce repair kits for it. If air from the pneuma begins to poison, the compressor immediately tries to make up for losses and breaks from overload. In addition, it often fails due to its location: dirt accumulates there, as if it weren’t covered by protective devices. The mechanism fails due to corrosion of elements, both external and internal. On our sample, both the compressor and the cylinders were replaced even up to 100 thousand. By the way, an attentive owner himself draws attention to the fact that the compressor constantly “rumbles”. By quickly replacing the “cylinder” that poisons the air, you can extend the life of the pump. Finally, there is the opposite situation: the rear shock absorbers work without failures, but the compressor breaks. But this is not a reason for replacement – they often cost the replacement of a corroded pressure sensor or wiring to it.
The biggest problem with brakes happens again for those who drive hyperactively – this is overheating of the mechanisms, which often causes the brake caliper anthers to burst. But with careful use, brakes designed for emergency deceleration of a large mass vehicle, on the contrary, take a very long time: you can change the pads after 50, 60 and even 80 thousand km – at the “official”, where we study the used Cadillac Escalade 3 generations, and there have been such cases. The driver of our instance with a run under 200 thousand km only once changed wheels after the run exceeded a hundred. As for the reckless people, they barely have enough for 20 thousand km, but, according to the stories of our technical specialist, there haven’t been such people in the last two or three years – they have increased …

The frame on the good old Escalade suffers only in the event of an accident. As for the rust, which is clearly visible in the photographs, this is the “native” American paint eaten by our reagents: the iron itself does not decay, does not deteriorate, although the view of the frame, of course, is not marketable. Meanwhile, the frame needs to be watched, or at least protected from rust, that place on the side member, where the VIN number is knocked out, which can rot, and then … “The bloom” and the cardan, but, according to Roman, there are no problems with it, and here the needle bearings in the cross are replaced. We replace the stabilizer bushings in the region of 100 thousand kilometers, but the backlash in the tips and rods of the steering appear much later. The mechanism itself does not cause any trouble – there are cases when the rail flows, but extremely rarely.
The tubes of the air conditioner and heater for the back row rot over time, even if they are constantly treated with special compounds: a pebble will still fall that will break the protective coating. You have to change the pipes, and you can’t do without an authorized dealer, because in the garage it is impossible to make joints of aluminum pipes that come from the factory unassembled.
