Eight red: tuning VAZ-21013
Vazovskaya “classic” is gradually moving from the category of signs of lack of money to the category of signs of the presence of some of their surpluses – that is, to the class of weekend cars. Someone drifts on them, someone restores them, and someone stylizes them. Today we’ll talk about the last option: this red penny is equally far from both the factory condition and the race tracks, but I’m not averse to taking a ride to the next exhibition. What is she ready to show there?
Once we already argued that even the Soviet automobile consumer goods, released in millions of copies, is becoming surprisingly small, and the purchase history of this “penny” is an indirect confirmation of this. After all, initially in 2013, Alexei began his search with the VAZ-2102, but for half a year none of the available proposals satisfied him. Meanwhile, his friend bought an orange VAZ-21013 1986 release, and the car hooked on both, so they began to deal with them together. And a year later, Alex bought the car – and so began the story of their life together, in which the “penny” managed to change several images.
It is easy to see that the tuning almost did not touch the exterior of the car. The body was originally in good condition after repair, and therefore did not require much effort. After the purchase, Alex only found the missing chrome – grille and side moldings. In this form, the car drove until 2018, when the idea came to update the color: now the “penny” is painted in orange metallic with a loud name “Lamborghini Aventador”. In addition to it, the only bright style element of appearance is the orange wheels from the American company ESM Wheels, shod with Nankang tires in the dimension 165/50/15.
The interior of the “penny” has undergone more changes since the purchase than the exterior, but not everyone can guess. For example, one of the first works was the replacement of an existing interior from 2107 with a stock brown one with associated sound insulation. The front panel is also painted in brown. And only after many months, Alexei decided on the next step: to replace the original front seats with the “retro bucket” from FK Automotive. Time and long trips proved that the refinement was not only stylish, but also useful. Well, in addition to the seats, the interior style is complemented only by a wooden steering wheel – for the rest, the Soviet atmosphere is familiar to many.
Practice shows that the more people drive a car, the higher their chances of getting an air suspension instead of “statics”: even if beauty requires sacrifice, but you want no less convenience. So it was with the Infiniti G25, which we talked about recently, so it happened with this “penny.” In 2015, the car underwent key technical improvements: a 4-circuit air suspension was installed in it, simultaneously shaving the engine compartment according to the canons of the clean look style. Wiring and other “excess” was transferred to the cabin, unnecessary holes were welded, and the native 1.2-liter engine was moved. But the final look gave the engine compartment … a piece of tulle. No, this is not a joke: the effect that many take for aquaprint was achieved through the sponsorship of the mother-in-law of Alexei, who provided him with the remnants of thin fabric. “Technology” is ultimately simple: after applying the base, which has become a silver metallic, the details are wrapped in tulle and painted with the right paint. Here, by the way, it was not without changes: initially the contrast was blue, but a year later Alexey painted everything with red paint, having achieved a red and black final drawing.
Returning to the air suspension, it is worth indicating its configuration. These are AirMaxx 2500 pillows and the Airmasters valve block, suspension control – from Aceoface. Stock levers replaced with a kit from Airkit. Well, the installation is framed in the trunk: what is in sight is an aluminum receiver, painted all using the same original “tulle” technology, and under the raised floor – a Berkut R24 compressor and valves.
In addition to the suspension, there are changes in the brakes and steering. The brakes were moved with the addition of a vacuum booster, which was not originally here. The steering mechanism is completely replaced by rack and pinion from Volkswagen Golf MkII for better information and greater reliability.
For several years of life, Alexei “penny” managed to change not only a couple of sets of wheels, but even the style direction. Initially, he built the car in the “resto” style, and the first disks were collapsible BBS RM from Golf II. Everything went as it should: understatement by -90 mm, painting discs, then changing their shelves with expanding discs from 6.5 to 8 inches … However, after a while, an understanding came of a few facts that determined the current look of the machine: BBS discs are too popular, and a static understated suspension is too impractical. So Alexey came to the ESM Wheels 8 inches wide and air suspension, which allows you to lay the arches exactly on the edge of the disks. Everything is clear, as in a casino, and in this casino Alexey put everything on “eight red” – and absolutely did not lose.
Oddly enough, the plans for the near future are to change the wheels again and reconfigure the image of the car to their style. The main idea is to add a bit of racing surroundings: buckets are already here, so now it’s the turn of 4-point seat belts. And the belts will not appear here for beauty: Alexei is thinking about installing a 1.7-liter VAZ engine with Weber motorbikes or horizontal Weber carburetors, as well as more productive brakes. But, given the history of the machine, who knows where the roulette ball will go this time …
