Like a Niva, it’s only better: is it worth buying a Toyota RAV4 II for 500 thousand rubles (part 2)
However, those who want a crossover with an automatic transmission will also not be disappointed: this is an old and four-stage, but delightfully reliable Aisin U140. Given in addition that it can work with engines up to 3 liters, and the maximum available engine in RAV4 has only 2.4, the box does not work at its limits. True, off-road rides, coupled with poor service, can easily compensate for this “oversight,” and there were plenty of the first and second in the life of many crossovers. It’s hard to get the box before 250-300 thousand, although control electronics failures may occur earlier, and the wear of the torque converter lock plates depends on the riding style. However, from a mechanical point of view, the resource, provided that the oil is replaced every 60-80 thousand, can exceed 350 thousand kilometers. It’s only unconditionally to believe in this reliability is too late: given the age of the machines, all the boxes have probably survived at least one intervention, and it is absolutely impossible to study the history of service after 15-20 years. So devote time and money to the diagnosis of the box, so as not to be an exception to those who think the box is great. And yes, be prepared for decent fuel consumption: even if the car is not heavy, but 2-2.4 liter engines, coupled with imperfect aerodynamics and only 4 steps in the box, promise double-digit numbers of liters per hundred.
The second-generation RAV4 engine range includes four units: three gasoline and one diesel. A two-liter 1CD-FTV diesel engine can be left out of the discussion: it is not ideal in itself, in addition to age-related malfunctions of fuel equipment, one can also encounter cylinder head problems, and in addition, cars on sale with it are literally piece-wise, so there is almost nothing to choose from. Therefore, you can start with the youngest gasoline engine – the 1.8-liter 1ZZ-FE, which we once dubbed “one of the most unsuccessful Toyota engines of the beginning of the century.” It would seem that a low degree of forcing (power – 125 hp), lack of boost, a timing chain drive – what could go wrong? Operational practice shows that almost everything: the sensitivity to malfunctions of the cooling system up to the “behavior” of the unit, the difficulty of repairing the cylinder head due to the lack of cast-iron seats, the low piston life, and on engines until 2003, there is also a massive oil consumption due to bedding piston rings and cylinder wear … Of course, the engines are being repaired with varying degrees of success and diligence, and now you can see an unfilled engine on a middle-aged car, but there is only a point in such a purchase if it is at an interesting price.

Otherwise, it is easier to choose a car with more voluminous, powerful and reliable engines of 2 or 2.4 liters – 1AZ-FE and 2AZ-FE, respectively, which, by the way, was also inherited by the “third” RAV4. The difference in power is insignificant: 150 forces against 160-170, therefore, given the low prevalence of the 2.4-liter engine, you can safely consider buying a two-liter. Moreover, they are structurally the same: an aluminum block with cast-iron sleeves, a timing chain drive and distributed fuel injection. On examination, it is worth listening to the operation of the valve mechanism, in which there are no hydraulic compensators – the knock of valves will give out a machine that they did not like to care for.
Given the age, it is very desirable to study the condition of the cylinders with an endoscope and inquire about the fate of the catalyst, if, of course, the current, and not one of the previous owners, dealt with it. Timing maintenance is also a relevant issue, but it is even better to prophylactically replace the chain with the stars and the tensioner after purchase. After spending 15 thousand for the original timing kit or 7-10 for the non-original one and the same amount for replacement, you can forget about 150 thousand – that is, almost forever, unless you are going to travel or go on a “rafik” forever. There is a phase shifter at the inlet, but it is also not very expensive – 7-9 thousand for the original and 5-6 for the analogue. In general, if you lay the potential resource of the motor at the level of 350-400 thousand kilometers, even older cars with twisted mileage (that is, every first one) are able to travel a few more years to overhaul – well, or to replace the motor with a “contract” one, depending on what you like best.

Well, now, having figured out what you should be prepared for, you can create a portrait of RAV4, for which it would not be a pity to pay half a million. The choice of the number of doors remains to your taste, but of course the five-door option will be more popular and universal. With the engine, we decided on the gearbox, too: the easiest way to look for a well-groomed crossover with a two-liter gasoline engine and automatic transmission. With all this in mind, an ideal car looks something like this: a body without traces of rust, obscure headlights, a whole windshield, regular “city” wheels and other indirect signs promise a decent technical condition.
